C2 | LANGUARD FORT

Landguard Fort stands at one of the most strategically important points on the Suffolk coast. For centuries, this stretch of shoreline helped protect the approaches to Harwich Harbour and the rivers Orwell and Stour beyond. The fort seen today is the result of generations of military development, adaptation and defence.

The site is best known for its role in the attempted Dutch landing of 1667, often regarded as the last opposed invasion attempt on English soil. Over the years the fort continued to evolve, serving different military purposes as technology and threats changed.

Today, Landguard Fort offers a glimpse into Felixstowe’s military past. Its walls, tunnels and defensive structures tell the story of a coastline that once played a vital role in the defence of the country. From the ramparts there are also impressive views across the harbour, shipping channels and surrounding coastline, connecting the fort’s history with the landscape it was built to protect.
